I've been leaning that way recently. Specifically, the area of Valle Vidal. It was part of the Maxwell land grant, and was EXTENSIVELY mined (Riches Old), and 500,000+ acres right next to the Valle is owned by Ted Turner (Riches New).

It's also the Valle Vidal, which means "Valley of Life". In my mind, death is the "Valley of Life", so it would make sense for Fenn to go "Alone in there" since we all end up dying alone.

Just rambling here but...
As i have gone alone in there. I have always considered this line to mean a place that one could literally walk(or crawl) into. Wasnt until just recently that i opened up to the possibility of a vicinity as opposed to a cave or overhanging cliff or whatever. People go into canyons all the time or even into a town, into the woods, or even in a body of water. If we assume (which in itself could be dangerous) that whatever we go into is "cold" then that could narrow the search a bit.

New and old mexico, very good, never thought of that.

Of course it's cold...relatively speaking. The poem tells us so.

This is just me pretending to know something. Which I don't of course. But I could, couldn't I?

Nah.
Read Stanza 1 several times, until you see that it tells you he made two trips in there. One alone and one with his treasures.
I always thought "alone" was Solo, nm. from there go to WWWH.
Mustag,
I like that idea. 2 trips in there, one alone and one with his treasures. Nice
