Safety in the Mountains
I stumbled across this safety article on a non-chase related forum, and found it quite fascinating. It is a very lengthy read. The subject is matter is dark and deals with a tragic, tragic loss on Mt. Shasta, and yet, I was able to extract a few useful tips which I am applying to my solve.

RE: Safety in the Mountains
Having experienced a bad case of altitude sickness at Breckenridge years ago, I can attest that it is a very serious issue not to be taken lightly. If you believe you are experiencing altitude sickness, it is important that you drive (or be driven) to a significantly lower altitude immediately. The doctor at Breckenridge looked at my chest X-ray from about 20 feet away across a room. His reaction: "Get off the mountain, NOW!"

RE: Safety in the Mountains
Thanks for posting that. It's really a sad story. I didn't know that AMS could kill at such a low elevation.

Do you know if Tom and Mark lived at sea level and then went up that fast and slept? They were monsters. "It had been a very long day. We had climbed almost 5,000 ft in snow with 50 lb packs in 6 hours and in total that day we had climbed about 8,500 ft and 13 miles in the snow to an elevation of just over 13,500 ft."

I guess I knew of a case in Mexico where an astronomer flew in from Paris to DF and was then driven to the telescope on the top of Sierra Negra (15,000') and went to sleep and died. Sleeping at elevation is especially dangerous. You don't ventilate nearly as well while sleeping.
