Meaning of clue...loaded with Fenn references?
late Middle English: variant of clew. The original sense was ‘a ball of thread’; hence one used to guide a person out of a labyrinth. clue (sense 1 of the noun) dates from the early 17th century.

I read this and about choked....

Yea the ball of string he collected...I always wondered who in his family took it...skippy likely but who knows lol

It’s a great sign to I think any of us that are working on a solve. Better to be in a labyrinth than a maze if you’re on the right track?

There are a few ways to look at it. On the one hand the hint could be the ball of string. Or he might be using the ball of string to point out that there is a big clue here. Or it could be both.

I don't know about the labyrinth. Most of the other clues seem to work at a more basic level.

See final picture here - https://imgur.com/a/sLcXwHm (why is it I must go, here me all - for whom the bell tolls)

Rorschach test - it looks like a 7 ringed hole (eg. 7 mile hole). Or maybe it's 9 holes? Meh

He said many of the strings he tied onto his ball were white. Some posters mentioned white lies. To tell a yarn = to tell a lie. Missing in some of the illustrations are the cats that were in the initial illustrations that were copied from, yet Fenn writes about cats in TTOTC and that they hung on the clothesline(iirc) like "wet socks". What do cats play with? (and I think they are playing with in the original illustration).
