Dang it OH! You spoiled my fun. HAHA. Of course he's describing a metal detector. Another lesson in Fennism.

Nothing really matters till one understands that Knoiwlege does not equal Understanding.

Hmmm. Based on my dictionary of Fennisms, I would have to give you a "D"!

You have a point.
Because he went to this place twice in one afternoon.
Not evening or night.
Yet he still insists that you take a sandwich and a flashlight???

As I remember, FF, rather than insisting, suggested that a searcher take/bring a flashlight and a sandwich. About a flashlight, he included
"for those searching at night". Hiking around at night in an area of cactus and cats seems a bit risky to me. Don't cats tend to hunt at night? I'd rather hunt than be hunt-Ted.

The coyote pack hunts at night; I did not use the tent at night after I observed two elk kills from the first night in the tent. The bones were scattered all around about 1200' from my tent. I walked back to vehicle each evening after hearing the pack barking and the elk torn in a dozen directions.
I guess I am a wuss.
If you are searching with a sand witch (metal detector) in the parks, make sure it is the wand type in case the park police comes along so you can quickly use it as a cane. I got a warning from the park policeman to put mine (it is a very old one with the huge pickup coil) in vehicle; now he knows me when we pass and engages in idle talk but secretly he is looking in my truck, lol.
I think Forrest is "making fun" of some "night searchers" that would need a flashlight. Or maybe you need a match that flashes and makes a light for the bomb fuse. I'm tired, night.
just saying ss

The flashlight could be simply for hiker safety.

Many hikers misjudge the time (or get hurt, or get temporarily lost), and do not make it back to their parked car, etc., before nightfall. Then they are trying to hike out with limited or no light, and/or they are stuck in place for the night.
