There was once a master who took on a new student. The student was required to join the master every day for tea. When the appropriate time arrived each day, the student was required to sit across the ceremonial table from his master. The master would instruct the student to pour the tea from the pot and fill both the master’s cup and the student’s. Then once the tea was poured the master would instruct the student to sip and enjoy the warm soothing tea.

As the student began to pick up and raise the tea to his lips the master would take his walking stick and whack the student on the head, causing the student to spill his tea.

“Ouch,” the student would yelp. Then the master would instruct the student to clean up the mess, heat the pot, and pour a new cup of tea for himself. “Drink your tea, my worthy student,” the master would say. And the student again would raise the cup to his lips, and begin to sip the warm tea and then the master would rap him on the hand and he would spill the tea and the cup would fall and the student would again wail in pain.

When the student avoided drinking the tea, the master would also crack the cane across his cheek or smack his hands or whack him on the head, until the student relented and drank the tea. Then the master would knock the tea from his hand and send the cup and hot tea spilling across the room.

Then the master again ordered the student to make a fresh pot of tea, and to warm up the kettle and to pour again a new cup of tea for himself, and again the master smacked the student on the nose with his cane causing the student to spill his tea and cry in agony.

This went on day after day, the student making tea as instructed and the master with his cane knocking the tea from the student’s hand every time he was instructed to take a sip.

Then one day the student understood the truth in all things…
