I suspect the raft floated away while the human was not expecting it to, taking the dog with it, and he went on foot to rescue the dog. I would risk my life to save my dog.

Look at the weather each day in New Mexico...........Maybe 20's during the day at night really bitch numbers - 5 -13 Jan 10 11th..........

I was in the area seven days ago, when the temperature went to -3F at night. Just a few miles north it was -12F in places. If the missing person fell in the water, he might not have known to take his clothing off immediately; he might not have known to keep walking no matter how much agony he was in.

If you want an estimate of the temperature on the river you can get the temperature for White Rock here:

http://www.wunderground.com/history/airp....wmo=99999

and then add 5 or 10 degrees F. I'm not sure how much warmer the river is but I'll guarantee it is warmer. The low in White Rock which is a subdivision roughly 1,000' above the river where he went was 19F last night and a degree F or two higher the preceding days.

Your telling me he's alive?

Source:

blah blah

Those numbers don't mean anything. I know exactly how cold it has been at my house. A low of 5. My guess is that the river hasn't been colder than 20F at Buckman crossing. If could be wrong but you are certainly wrong. The temperature varies A LOT. You can go 5 miles and have a 20 degree temperature difference. Easy. I don't know how much cold air settles in the river and how much it is warmer because it is lower. What I know is that when I go down hill from my house it gets warmer. A few miles away from my house there is an official weather station. It has a low of 9F for the same days where the low at my house was 5F. I think it would be substantially warmer on the river.

Any guess on wind chill factor lately down there?

Dunno. Not much wind I would guess. I don't do winter river running. Canyons are generally sheltered from the wind. In the summer there are afternoon upstream winds in more or less all river canyons. I don't know if that happens in the winter. My guess is that it doesn't. Wouldn't be much wind at night either.

EDIT: The lowest temperature in White Rock subdivision during the time in question was 8F on January 11 with a Wind Chill of -2F. http://www.wunderground.com/history/airp....wmo=99999

I would add 10F to that for the river temperature and probably ignore the windchill. But still I don't think it likely he has survived 10 days out. I think he probably fell. It might be spring before we find out though.

David you have one of the kindest hearts I know. I for sure know you would.

I like John's encouragement that there's a chance..but even those good numbers seem too cold. Maybe he was set to get into the raft when it floated away with the puppy dog and he's been hiking around trying to find him. Maybe he's dry and has had a lighter to keep warm in a cave. I know Jeff and I once went to one of those places you put a raft in and I swear we were driving an hour all the way from the main road...if he was on foot and didn't know which way was out...I don't know...I want to believe, but it really doesn't seem likely if it's been 10 days without food probably...

I didn't read carefully. I missed that he had been missing since January 4. Somehow I thought he was only missing for the last 3-4 days. If he put on the river on January 4 he is probably dead.

If you're ever out there and searching or hiking alone, do yourself a favor, and invest $250 on an Emergency Personal Locator Beacon(PLB). It could save your life!

You were right Cloud. Weren't you at that one?

No I saw Forrest at the lounge of the Loretto Inn the night before the first book signing for TFTW in early october of 2013. I haven't been to a signing since but had planned to attend that one in 2015. I didn't make it though.

RE: Treasure hunter missing
Perhaps its about time F clarifies the dangers and what you should not do. Its a bit subjective saying don't go where an 80 year old man would not go. F is an exceptional octogenarian and probably more capable than others his age.

Do we need a boat or to wade through cold water to get the chest? Would it really be too much of a clue to give out that info?

Perhaps he should say we dont need to ascend or descend steep slopes, cross or travel over fast running water/rapids, come in close proximity to dangerous wildlife (grizzlies) or travel over treacherous ground.

Seeker9 said he thought Randy was at a book signing and that was probably where we had seen a picture of him. I had thought he might have been a blogger. So it looks i did see a picture of him on Dal's blog but was mistaken that it was a gravitar picture.

RE: Treasure hunter missing
So did Forrest think of this when he tried to think of everything? And hid it anyway? Or was this an oversight on his part?
