It may be true that he doesn't have the DESIRE to mislead, but misleads out of necessity.

That one word, desire, changes the whole meaning. So just because he doesn't desire to mislead, doesn't mean he doesn't do it.

I might be implying that but I'm not sure if the location is in his memoir, if his memoir has all of his prized memories in it then maybe. Go back to the poem and read line 3, then ask yourself if he gives away the secret location of the chest in the book(not including the poem)?

Maybe a better question is ask yourself how you acquired your most "vivid" memories?

Here's some links to "line 3" archive threads folks with some great ideas worth lookin into, but are admittedly biased toward this redneck's perspective on how line 3 is interpreted in my solve. I may or may Not be right on this Line 3, but feel it's plausible. Mostly because I stumbled upon a virtually hidden one in my search area by Pure Luck once, now if I could only remember weir... Doh!

Putting the word 'where' at the end of a line of poetry is a very unusual thing to do. I've read a lot of poetry and I don't believe I've ever seen it done before. And a 'secret weir' could make sense if it referred to a small dam structure on a creek. Why dam up a creek? To create small pools of calmer water where fish might gather, making them easier to catch. Cultures around the world construct simple rock weirs to fulfill a treasured pastime called eating.

If we put 'secret where' together with 'gone alone' from the first line we might come up with a secret weir on Canjilon Creek in northern NM.

The local Hispanic populations have used them for hundreds of years, and Native American cultures before that so the creation of weirs is an ancient skill. Natural weirs could also qualify if you're picky about weirs being man-made. In that case, Hebgen Dam/Lake could qualify since it was formed by an earthquake and certainly modified the flow of the Madison River.

Or you might come across a secret where in the book, one that is slightly different than all the rest.

Point of order: Hebgen Lake/Dam was not formed by an earthquake although its shoreline was significantly changed by the same earthquake that formed Quake Lake.
