Happy Birthday Bessie
I was re-reading all the energetic discussion around the girl from India and boy from Waxahachie, and I decided to look up the etymology of Waxahachie. One theory is that it derives from native american words for cow tail:
---------- "Waxahachie" therefore may be an anglicized pronunciation of the Muscogee compound word Wakvhvce from the Muscogee words Wakv (meaning "cow" derived from the Spanish vaca) and the Muscogee word Hvce (meaning "tail"). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waxahachie...#Etymology ---------- Talk of cow's tails immediately brought to mind the TTOTC chapter Bessie and Me. I happened to check today's Google doodle (Jan 26), and it features Bessie Coleman, first African American woman to get a pilot's license: ---------- She was the first female pilot of African American descent and was also the first woman of Native American descent to hold a pilot license. She is also the first person of African American and Native American descent to hold an international pilot license. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bessie_Coleman ---------- Aviation aside, the very interesting connection is that Bessie grew up in Waxahachie, TX. https://www.google.com/doodles/bessie-co...h-birthday So, Happy Birthday Bessie! |
