Forrest buried a handful of Cast items 4' down
And they are just gentle reminders that he spent some time here on earth. How far down do you think he hid a treasure worth a couple million bucks?

8 inches

6 feet is the standard depth for a treasure.

Tarry scant
Not too deep
He wants it found sooner than later
But doesn't want someone not proactively searching to happen by and see it.
The poem will bring you close to the spot then you must use the blaze and other means (poke sticks, metal detector, hands) to uncover the treasure.

At one time I thought it was 8' deep in an Indian burial cyst. I now actively seek out and exorcise my guesses.

With a shovel, and a pick ax, it is very possible that he could have dug a 6 foot hole in an afternoon.
Taking 2 trips.

Walking to the spot with the chest, backpack, duffel bag, etc...
Walking back to the car, to retrieve the shovel and pick.
Then walking back to the spot, with the shovel, and pick.
Leaving behind the shovel and pick to walk back to the car.
Getting into the car and driving away, with nothing but a smile.

JB, would a bronze box be detected in a cyst with a metal detector that deep?

There are lots of different metal detectors. I'm not sure you could detect a steel plate that was 100' across in both directions but only 6" deep with most/all metal detectors. But yeah. My metal detector is supposed to be able to pick up something like the chest at 8'. But I rather doubt he's done anything like this.
