The first step when starting the chase

The first step when starting the chase
About the only thing that can be done to help keep everyone safe is to inform them of the risk. Hiking is dangerous! The first step of the chase should be preparation for the actual BOTG.

I thought this article was very well written. Too many people ignore the risks and just set out with no supplies and no WHAT IF plan in case they get lost. I've found myself lost two times now and I was amazed how a wrong turn on an easy trail can turn into a fight for survival when the sun sets and the air temp drops below freezing. I hope we have no more deaths related to the chase, but that's wishful thinking given the attitude and preparation by many of the searchers.

One of the most amazing stats in the article is that 17 people died hiking up to Half Dome in 2011. (That was in just one year! )
