Is Eric Ashby the Latest to Die Searching
Seems fishy too me...

Eric Ashby, 31, remains missing after his raft reportedly flipped on a challenging part of the Arkansas River on June 28. A friend who's leading online efforts to raise awareness about the situation believes Ashby died searching for what's described as a $2 million treasure hidden by New Mexico author Forrest Fenn. If he's right, Ashby is the third person from Colorado to perish while looking for this prize in just over a year and a half, and the second in two months.

"They were looking for Forrest Fenn's treasure," says Dave Gambrell, one of the driving forces behind the Find Eric Ashby Facebook group. "Eric told his friends who flew in from Florida, 'I know where the treasure is,' and then he went into the river in a Walmart inflatable raft. You can't go through Class 5 rapids in that kind of raft."

So sad, but so foolhardy of him. SMH...

He kind of looks like Russell Crowe in article pic.

I went down that river, with a license chartered water guide, a raft that is meant for those rapids, life vest, and helmet; any other way is just pure foolishness.

Will Fenn say soon that crossing a river or rafting is not necessary?

i think that saying an 80 year old man hid it and it isnt dangerous rules out the idea that Forrest had to take a raft to get to the spot

Have you ever rafted? I took my 6 year old daugher down the Rio Chama recently. It wasn't remotely dangerous.

I have rafted many times is safe class one rapids and agree, but also have been on several class five rapids. It was intense.

Some of these searchers may not fully realize the differences. One is recreation, one is a sport that can risk your life.

i havent been rafting

i read stories of people dying while rafting

one in particular sticks in my mind

some people went rafting and they had an experienced professional with them for training, advice, and was along for the ride in case of trouble

they had helmets and life vests. a woman ended up getting killed

i figure an activity where you are advised to wear vests and helmets is because there is inherent danger involved

The issue with higher rapids is that your life jacket can get caught if you fall in. You can't get lose from the tangle of what is beneath. Of course amount other risks. I had this happen and had to fight my way back up. That was my last trip. Just not worth the risk.
