THE HINTS- VITAL TO SUCCESS
(01-10-2018, 12:27 PM)Becky from WV Wrote: @Mindy - So how would that word "daffodils" have been used in a sentence? Maybe in an eatery where the cook would ask someone else to hand him the "daffodils" ... meaning the butter & eggs? Let me grab me notes....I have a little time right now... Butter-and eggs was the archaic term for a daffodil. It doesn’t say slang or how they used it. Here’s the book I’m looking at, and the entry (I just realaized I’m not in a Tapatalk, so I’ll add the pics in a few): ![]() ![]() And here are some archaic meanings you probably won’t find online for other poem words (from volume one of this 2 volume set) BRAVE: 1. Finely dressed, GOOD 2. A boast, a vaunt. 3. A bravo, a ruffian 4. WELL, in good health 5. A TROPHY BUT: This one had many definitions—I’ll include all of them to give folks an idea of the diversity of word meanings— 1. A peculiar kind of conical basket used for catching salmon. 2. A cast; a throw. 3. Contended or struggled with 4. A founder or place 5. Without, unless 6. A piece of ground, portion of a garden. Also the thick or fleshy part of a plant. 7. A shoemakers knife 8. A buttock of beef 9. Any large vessel or cart 10. Strong leather 11. “But and ben” the inner and outer part of only two rooms 12. A hassock 13. A beehive 14. Suddenly 15. A kind of cap 16. Rough or ragged 17. To exchange or barter. CAN: 1. A milk pail 2. To know 3. To be able 4. Began to COLD: 1. Could; knew 2. To grow cold 3. Sober; serious 4. Nothing to the point or purpose DOWN: 1. A company of hares 2. To knock down, TO FALL 3. Sickly, poorly 4. Disconsolate, cast down 5. A HILL 6. Having one’s eye nearly blind 7. A BANK OF SAND. FAR: 1. “I will not.” HALT: 1. A shrub, a copse 2. Held, KEPT 3. A strong hamper, as used with a pack saddle 4. Animal deposit HINT: 1. Seized, took 2. A cause or subject And here’s one I think is pretty good: A RICHARD-SWARY was a dictionary. (Riches old and. Ew?) I’ll post some J-Z words later if anyone wants. And if anyone has a particular word you want me to look up, let me know. ![]() https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMAnEYj...UN1I6me_0g http://www.myeverwonderland.blogspot.com |
